Fundamentals of Task Communication

A configuration task posts new settings to a mailbox; operational tasks check the mailbox for updates and apply new configurations. Comparison with Queues

Choosing between mailboxes and queues depends on application requirements. Queues are appropriate when every message must be processed, when message history matters, or when buffering is needed between producer and consumer. Mailboxes suit scenarios where only current state matters, memory is constrained, or overwrite semantics are desirable.

Some RTOS platforms do not provide distinct mailbox primitives, instead implementing mailbox behavior through single-entry queues or task notification mechanisms. Semaphores

Semaphores are fundamental synchronization primitives that control access to shared resources and coordinate task execution. Counting Semaphores

Counting semaphores track multiple available resources or accumulate multiple events for later processing.

Resource pool management commonly uses counting semaphores. If a system has five identical resources, a semaphore initialized to five tracks availability. Each task takes the semaphore to acquire a resource and gives it to release the resource. The semaphore ensures that no more than five tasks hold resources simultaneously, blocking additional requesters until a resource becomes available.

Event counting applications initialize the semaphore to zero and give it each time an event occurs. Mutexes

Mutexes (mutual exclusion semaphores) are specialized synchronization primitives designed specifically for protecting shared resources from concurrent access. A mutex can be in one of two states: locked or unlocked. Only one task can hold (lock) a mutex at any time. When a task attempts to lock an already-locked mutex, it blocks until the owning task unlocks the mutex. Unlike semaphores, mutexes track which task holds the lock, and typically only the owning task can unlock the mutex.

Ownership tracking enables priority inheritance and priority ceiling protocols that prevent unbounded priority inversion. When a high-priority task blocks on a mutex held by a lower-priority task, the owning task inherits the blocked task's priority, ensuring it runs at elevated priority until it releases the mutex. Priority Inversion Prevention

Priority inversion occurs when a high-priority task is blocked waiting for a resource held by a lower-priority task, while medium-priority tasks execute and prevent the resource holder from running. Priority inheritance protocol temporarily raises the priority of a mutex holder to match the highest priority of any task waiting for that mutex. This ensures the holder runs at sufficient priority to release the mutex promptly. Priority ceiling protocol assigns each mutex a ceiling priority equal to the highest priority of any task that may use it. A task locking the mutex immediately assumes the ceiling priority, preventing priority inversion scenarios from arising.

Recursive Mutexes

Standard mutexes do not support recursive locking: a task attempting to lock a mutex it already holds will deadlock (or receive an error, depending on implementation). Use mutexes for mutual exclusion, not for signaling or event notification. Mutexes are designed for the lock-access-unlock pattern where the same task that locks also unlocks. For signaling between tasks or from interrupts to tasks, use semaphores or event flags instead.

Event Flags

Event flags (also called event groups or event bits) provide a mechanism for tasks to wait for combinations of events. An event flag group contains multiple binary flags, typically 8, 16, or 32 bits. Tasks can set, clear, and wait for individual flags or combinations of flags, enabling flexible synchronization patterns not easily achieved with semaphores or mutexes.

Event Flag Operations

Setting a flag marks that a particular event has occurred. Clearing a flag resets it for future use. The wait operation blocks a task until specified flags are set, with options to wait for all specified flags (AND) or any of them (OR). Upon waking, the waiting task can optionally clear the consumed flags to acknowledge the events.

Multiple tasks can wait on the same event flag group, each potentially waiting for different flag combinations. When flags are set, all tasks whose wait conditions are satisfied become ready to run. This broadcast capability distinguishes event flags from semaphores, which typically wake only one waiting task per give operation.

Synchronization Patterns

Each task sets its designated flag upon reaching the rendezvous; all tasks wait for all flags to be set. Once all flags are set, all tasks proceed simultaneously. Status monitoring uses event flags to track system state. Different flags indicate different conditions: sensor ready, communication link up, calibration complete, and so forth. Timeout and abort handling combines event flags with timeout waits. A task waits for either a completion flag or a timeout condition. Successful completion sets the completion flag; error conditions set an abort flag. The waiting task handles whichever condition occurs first, enabling robust error handling without dedicated error-checking code.

Event Flags vs. Semaphores

Event flags and semaphores serve different synchronization needs. Semaphores count events or resources; event flags track binary conditions. Critical sections are code regions that access shared data and must execute atomically with respect to other tasks accessing the same data. Interrupt disabling provides critical section protection when shared data is accessed by both tasks and interrupt service routines. Since ISRs cannot block on mutexes, disabling interrupts prevents ISR execution during the critical section. Reader-Writer Synchronization

When shared data is read frequently but written rarely, reader-writer locks improve concurrency over simple mutexes. Multiple readers can access the data simultaneously since reading does not modify shared state. Writers require exclusive access, blocking until all readers finish and preventing new readers from starting.

Reader-writer locks introduce complexity and potential starvation issues. Reader-preference implementations may starve writers if readers arrive continuously. Writer-preference implementations may cause reader delays. Fair implementations alternate between readers and writers but may reduce overall throughput. Lock-Free Data Structures

Memory Protection Hardware
