High-Speed Serial Links

High-speed serial links have revolutionized digital communication by replacing wide parallel buses with narrow, differential connections operating at multi-gigabit rates. By transmitting data one bit at a time at very high frequencies, serial links eliminate the timing skew and crosstalk problems that plague parallel interfaces while achieving aggregate bandwidths that far exceed what parallel buses could practically deliver. Technologies like PCI Express, SATA, USB, and Ethernet rely on serial link architectures to provide the bandwidth demanded by modern computing and communications.

The success of high-speed serial links depends on sophisticated analog and mixed-signal circuits that serialize parallel data, transmit it through lossy channels, and reliably recover both clock and data at the receiver. These serializer/deserializer (SerDes) circuits employ advanced techniques including line coding, clock and data recovery, pre-emphasis, and adaptive equalization to maintain signal integrity despite channel impairments that would render simpler approaches unusable.

SerDes Architecture

The serializer/deserializer forms the heart of every high-speed serial link, converting between the parallel data buses used by digital logic and the serial bit streams transmitted across physical channels. SerDes architectures have evolved to achieve ever-higher data rates while maintaining compatibility with standard logic interfaces and manufacturing processes.

Transmitter Architecture

The transmit path begins with a parallel-to-serial converter that accepts data words from the digital logic domain and produces a serial bit stream at the line rate. This serialization typically occurs in stages, with a multiplexer tree progressively combining parallel bits into the final serial output. The serializer requires a high-frequency clock derived from a reference oscillator through a phase-locked loop that multiplies the frequency while maintaining low jitter.

The output driver translates the serialized data into the differential signals that travel across the physical medium. Current-mode logic drivers offer excellent performance at multi-gigabit rates, providing controlled output impedance for transmission line matching and support for adjustable pre-emphasis to compensate for channel losses. The driver must achieve fast switching while maintaining low jitter and controlled electromagnetic emissions.

Receiver Architecture

The receive path faces the challenge of extracting valid data from signals degraded by channel losses, reflections, crosstalk, and noise. An input buffer provides impedance matching and initial amplification while rejecting common-mode interference. Equalization circuits compensate for frequency-dependent channel losses, reopening the data eye to allow reliable sampling.

The clock and data recovery circuit extracts timing information from the data stream itself, generating a sampling clock aligned to the center of each bit period. The CDR must track frequency differences between transmitter and receiver reference clocks while filtering jitter and adapting to changing channel conditions. Once clock recovery locks, the deserializer samples the incoming bits and reassembles them into parallel words for the digital logic.

Clocking Architecture

High-speed serial links require extremely clean clock sources with jitter measured in femtoseconds to achieve target bit error rates. The transmit clock typically derives from a low-noise crystal oscillator through a jitter-attenuating PLL that multiplies the reference frequency to the line rate. Some architectures use fractional-N synthesizers to generate non-integer frequency ratios required by certain protocols.

The receive clock originates from the CDR circuit and must track the incoming data while rejecting high-frequency jitter. The CDR bandwidth represents a critical trade-off: wider bandwidth allows tracking of low-frequency wander but passes more high-frequency jitter, while narrower bandwidth filters jitter better but cannot track rapid frequency changes. Sophisticated CDR architectures employ multiple loops or adaptive bandwidth to optimize this trade-off.

Line Coding and Encoding

Raw binary data cannot be transmitted directly over high-speed serial links because long runs of identical bits would cause the clock recovery circuit to lose synchronization, and DC imbalance could saturate AC-coupled receivers. Line coding schemes transform the data to ensure adequate transition density and spectral characteristics suitable for reliable transmission.

8b/10b Encoding

The 8b/10b code maps each 8-bit data byte to a 10-bit transmission character, guaranteeing sufficient transitions for clock recovery and maintaining DC balance through running disparity control. Each input byte can map to one of two possible code words with opposite disparity, and the encoder selects which to use based on the accumulated disparity of previous transmissions.

The code provides at most five consecutive identical bits and ensures that the running count of ones and zeros remains nearly equal over time. Special control characters called K-codes mark packet boundaries, provide idle patterns, and support link management functions. While 8b/10b introduces 25 percent bandwidth overhead, its robust properties make it widely used in protocols including Fibre Channel, early SATA, and 1G Ethernet.

64b/66b and 128b/130b Encoding

To reduce the overhead penalty of 8b/10b encoding, newer protocols employ block codes with minimal overhead. The 64b/66b code used by 10G Ethernet and PCIe 3.0 adds only a 2-bit synchronization header to each 64-bit block, achieving approximately 3 percent overhead. The sync header distinguishes data blocks from control blocks and provides the transitions needed for block alignment.

A self-synchronizing scrambler randomizes the payload data to ensure adequate transition density and spread the signal spectrum. The scrambler uses a known polynomial and runs continuously, with the receiver using the same polynomial to descramble. The 128b/130b encoding used by PCIe 4.0 and later extends this approach with 1.5 percent overhead while maintaining similar properties.

PAM4 Signaling

Four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) doubles the data rate for a given symbol rate by encoding two bits per symbol using four distinct voltage levels. This approach has become essential for achieving 50 Gbps and 100 Gbps per lane data rates where the symbol rates required for NRZ signaling would exceed practical limits of silicon technology and channel bandwidth.

PAM4 reduces voltage margins by a factor of three compared to NRZ signaling, demanding more sophisticated equalization and error correction. Forward error correction (FEC) becomes mandatory to achieve acceptable bit error rates, with Reed-Solomon codes adding latency but dramatically improving effective error rates. Clock and Data Recovery

Phase-Locked Loop CDR

This error signal drives a loop filter that controls a voltage-controlled oscillator, adjusting its frequency and phase to center the clock on the data eye.

The loop bandwidth determines how quickly the CDR can track frequency changes and how much jitter it passes through. A wider bandwidth allows faster acquisition and better tracking of low-frequency jitter but passes more high-frequency jitter. The optimal bandwidth depends on the jitter characteristics of the transmitter and the receiver's tolerance for jitter.

Bang-Bang and Linear Phase Detectors

Bang-bang phase detectors make binary early/late decisions at each data transition, producing a constant magnitude output regardless of phase error size. This nonlinear behavior creates limit cycle oscillations called bang-bang jitter but offers robust operation and simple implementation. The bang-bang jitter amplitude depends on the update rate and loop dynamics.

Linear phase detectors produce output proportional to the phase error, enabling smoother tracking without bang-bang jitter. However, linear detectors require analog circuitry that becomes challenging at very high data rates. Hybrid architectures use bang-bang detection for acquisition and switch to linear operation for steady-state tracking to combine the benefits of both approaches.

Reference-Based and Referenceless CDR

Reference-based CDR architectures use a local crystal oscillator to generate a reference frequency close to the expected data rate. The CDR only needs to track the small frequency offset between transmitter and receiver references, typically a few hundred parts per million. This constraint simplifies the VCO design and improves jitter performance.

Referenceless CDR architectures must acquire and track the data rate without any local reference, requiring VCOs with wide tuning ranges and more sophisticated acquisition algorithms. While more complex, referenceless designs eliminate the need for accurate local oscillators and can operate with data from any source regardless of its precise frequency.

Pre-emphasis and Equalization

Physical channels exhibit frequency-dependent loss that attenuates high-frequency signal components more than low frequencies. This differential attenuation causes intersymbol interference as energy from each bit spreads into adjacent bit periods, closing the data eye and increasing error rates. Pre-emphasis and equalization compensate for channel losses to restore signal quality.

Transmitter Pre-emphasis

Pre-emphasis boosts signal amplitude during bit transitions relative to periods of consecutive identical bits. By emphasizing the high-frequency content at the transmitter where signal levels are highest, pre-emphasis compensates for subsequent channel attenuation. The first bit after a transition receives the full pre-emphasis boost, with optional additional taps affecting subsequent bits.

De-emphasis achieves similar frequency shaping by reducing amplitude during consecutive identical bits rather than boosting transitions. This approach maintains lower peak-to-peak swing, reducing electromagnetic emissions and power consumption. Modern transmitters provide configurable pre-emphasis or de-emphasis with multiple programmable taps to match various channel characteristics.

Continuous-Time Linear Equalization

CTLE provides analog high-frequency boost at the receiver using passive or active filter circuits. A typical CTLE implementation creates a zero in the transfer function that compensates for the pole introduced by channel capacitance. The amount of peaking and the corner frequencies are adjustable to match different channel loss profiles.

CTLE is most effective against smooth, monotonic channel losses but cannot correct for reflections or other non-monotonic impairments. The boosted high-frequency content includes noise as well as signal, so CTLE provides diminishing returns as loss increases. Practical limits typically constrain useful CTLE boost to 10-15 dB before noise amplification becomes problematic.

Decision Feedback Equalization

Decision feedback equalization uses known previous bit values to predict and cancel the intersymbol interference they cause on subsequent bits. Because DFE operates on decisions rather than analog signals, it does not amplify noise the way linear equalizers do. This allows DFE to compensate for more severe channel impairments than CTLE alone.

A DFE with N taps stores the N most recent bit decisions and multiplies each by a configurable coefficient. The sum of these products predicts the ISI contribution which is subtracted from the incoming signal before the next decision. Error propagation can occur when incorrect decisions cause improper ISI cancellation, though the effects are typically limited because DFE coefficients are usually smaller than the signal amplitude.

Feed-Forward Equalization

Feed-forward equalization uses a tapped delay line operating on the analog input signal to reduce ISI before the sampling decision. Unlike DFE, FFE can cancel precursor ISI caused by bits that have not yet been decided. However, FFE amplifies noise along with the signal, limiting its effectiveness for high-loss channels.

Advanced receivers combine CTLE, FFE, and DFE in a comprehensive equalization architecture. CTLE provides initial broadband boost, FFE addresses precursor ISI and shapes the pulse response, and DFE cancels postcursor ISI without noise penalty. Adaptive algorithms optimize all coefficients during link training to achieve the best eye opening for each specific channel.

Protocol Layers

High-speed serial link protocols organize functionality into layers that separate physical transmission from data formatting, flow control, and application-specific functions. This layered approach enables protocol evolution while maintaining compatibility and allows different implementations to optimize each layer independently.

PCI Express

PCI Express has evolved through multiple generations from 2.5 GT/s to 64 GT/s per lane, with each generation doubling bandwidth through faster signaling or more efficient encoding. The physical layer handles serialization, encoding, scrambling, and electrical signaling. The data link layer adds sequence numbers, CRC checking, and acknowledgment-based retry for reliable delivery.

The transaction layer formats read and write requests, completions, and messages according to a packet-based protocol. SATA and SAS

Serial ATA connects storage devices using a point-to-point serial link at rates from 1.5 Gbps to 6 Gbps. The protocol evolved from parallel ATA, maintaining command compatibility while improving bandwidth and cabling. SATA uses 8b/10b encoding and provides out-of-band signaling for device detection and speed negotiation.

USB

Universal Serial Bus has expanded from 12 Mbps in USB 1.0 to 80 Gbps in USB4 through a series of speed and protocol enhancements. Ethernet

Wavelength Division Multiplexing

Wavelength division multiplexing combines multiple optical signals at different wavelengths onto a single fiber, dramatically increasing aggregate capacity. Coarse WDM uses widely spaced wavelengths that can be separated with simple filters, supporting four to eight channels over standard single-mode fiber. Dense WDM packs channels much more tightly, enabling hundreds of channels but requiring precise wavelength control and amplification.

Short-reach WDM has emerged for data center applications, using four wavelengths around 1310 nm to achieve 100G or 400G over single-mode fiber with simplified transceivers compared to parallel fiber solutions.
