Simulation and modeling form the cornerstone of modern digital design verification, enabling engineers to validate circuit behavior and system functionality before committing designs to silicon or programmable logic. The cost of discovering errors increases exponentially as designs progress from specification through manufacturing, making early verification through simulation not merely helpful but economically essential. A bug found during simulation might cost hours to fix, while the same bug discovered in fabricated silicon could require months of redesign and millions of dollars in respun masks.

The evolution of simulation technology reflects the growing complexity of digital systems. Early simulators operated at the gate level, evaluating logic functions one at a time. Modern verification environments span multiple levels of abstraction, from transistor-accurate models through behavioral descriptions of entire subsystems. Engineers select simulation approaches based on the trade-offs between accuracy, performance, and the specific verification objectives at each design stage. Fundamentals of Digital Simulation

Digital simulation predicts how a circuit will behave in response to input stimuli by mathematically modeling the logical and timing relationships between signals. At its core, simulation involves three fundamental activities: applying stimulus to the design under test, evaluating the design's response, and comparing actual outputs against expected values. Test benches encapsulate these activities, providing the infrastructure that drives simulation. A well-designed test bench not only generates input patterns but also monitors outputs, checks for errors, measures coverage, and reports results in meaningful formats.

Abstraction Levels in Simulation

Digital designs can be simulated at various levels of abstraction, each offering different trade-offs between accuracy and simulation speed. Most design verification occurs at the RTL level, where designers can rapidly iterate on functional changes.

Above RTL, behavioral and transaction-level models abstract away implementation details to focus on system-level functionality. Signal Value Representation

In Verilog, for example, signals can have strengths ranging from supply (strongest) through strong, pull, weak, and highz (weakest). When multiple drivers conflict, the stronger signal wins. Event-Driven Simulation

Rather than repeatedly evaluating every gate at every time step, event-driven simulators evaluate only those elements affected by signal changes. This selective evaluation dramatically improves performance compared to exhaustive time-stepped approaches.

The fundamental concept is the event: a change in signal value scheduled to occur at a specific time. When an input to a logic element changes, the simulator evaluates that element and schedules an event for its output if the output value changes. Event Queue Management

Efficient event queue implementation is critical for simulation performance. The queue must support fast insertion of new events at arbitrary future times and fast extraction of the earliest event. Common implementations use heap-based priority queues, timing wheels for handling the common case of events clustered around the current time, or hybrid structures optimized for specific workload patterns.

Events occurring at the same simulation time require careful ordering to ensure deterministic and correct results. Most simulators define multiple regions within a time step where different types of operations occur. Active events that update signals process before inactive events that might evaluate those signals. Nonblocking assignment updates occur after all blocking assignments in a time step. This stratification ensures that simulation results match actual hardware behavior despite the sequential nature of software execution.

Delay Modeling

Accurate timing verification requires modeling the delays inherent in real hardware. Gate delays represent the time required for a logic element's output to change after its inputs change. Cycle-Based Simulation

However, cycle-based simulation has significant limitations. Designs with multiple asynchronous clock domains require careful handling since the simulator must somehow relate cycles across domains. Analog-mixed signal circuits, designs with combinational feedback loops, and circuits relying on specific timing behavior cannot be accurately simulated in cycle-based mode. Glitch-sensitive circuits like those using gated clocks may exhibit different behavior in cycle-based versus event-driven simulation.

Many verification flows use cycle-based simulation for high-volume functional testing while relying on event-driven simulation for timing verification and corner-case analysis. The two approaches complement each other, with cycle-based simulation providing throughput and event-driven simulation providing accuracy.

Optimizations in Cycle-Based Simulators

Debug in Emulation

Integrating Virtual Prototypes with Hardware Verification
